Ozone water purification system

Los Alamtos High School  is one of 16 teams participating from across the United States in the Lemelson-MIT EurekaFest 2013.

Our Invention:

The Los Alamitos High School InvenTeam will invent a new Ozone (O3) water purification system designed specifically for use by community members, mainly women and children, in locations that lack easy access to clean water(ie.Developing Countries). A corona discharge element produces a high output of ozone (up to 300 to 400 mg per hr) which can quickly disinfect 95% of all biological and viral pathogens. The device is designed to purify water at a rate of approximately 0.85 -1.7 L per minute (approximately 50 -100 L per hour) , enough to support fifty plus persons. It runs  primarily off a 100 watt solar panel and is completely energy independent. Various coconut shell charcoal based filters and .1 micron ceramic filters enable the system to remove near 90% or more bacteria and mineral contaminants. The system will cost approximately $300 to $400 per unit when in mass production.
